The United Nations and the UN-led process are the “only legitimate framework” for addressing the artificial regional dispute surrounding the Moroccan Sahara, said the Speaker of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid, on Monday in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
“Certain parties have developed the habit of exploiting international forums to raise the issue of the Moroccan Sahara outside the framework of the United Nations and the UN process, which remain the only legitimate framework to address this artificial regional dispute,” said Ould Errachid during a public debate on the sidelines of the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU), held in the Uzbek capital.

Such an attitude reflects positions that do not aim to defend the interests of the populations nor demonstrate a genuine desire to contribute to efforts to reach a political solution to this artificial regional dispute, he added.

In reality, this represents a premeditated intent to exploit the issue of the Moroccan Sahara for “narrow geopolitical ends, in service of backstage-planned agendas that are incompatible with the principles of the United Nations, including that of self-determination,” he stressed.

Ould Errachid also noted that dialogue and consultation spaces, such as the IPU Assembly, must remain forums for exchanging viewpoints and coordinating efforts on issues of common interest, free from narrow considerations or agendas, in a way that serves regional and international stability and peace, promotes understanding among peoples, and enables the achievement of the organization’s objectives.

Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of the theme of the 150th IPU Assembly, “Parliamentary action for social development and social justice,” noting that the theme reflects the organization’s renewed commitment to strengthening the role of national parliaments in promoting sustainable development.

He also welcomed the decision of the President of the United Nations General Assembly to appoint the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN to co-facilitate the UN negotiation process regarding the modalities of the political declaration of the upcoming World Summit on Social Development.

This recognition by the UN “reflects the trust placed by the international community in Morocco as a responsible and committed actor” and represents a “well-deserved acknowledgment of the considerable efforts undertaken by Morocco under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to strengthen and consolidate the pillars of the social state and achieve social justice—one of the main pillars of the Kingdom of Morocco’s new development model,” Ould Errachid concluded.
