UN: Algeria Rebuked for Attempt to Distort Security Council Resolution 2797 on Moroccan Sahara

The United Nations Secretariat has published the official text of the landmark Security Council Resolution 2797 concerning the question of the Moroccan Sahara, refuting Algeria’s attempt to distort the interpretation of this resolution and clearly confirming its responsibility as a party to the resolution.

This unprecedented delay in the publication of the resolution was due to Algeria’s objection to the translation into Arabic of the term “the parties,” as it appeared in the document put In Blue by the U.S. penholder, requesting that the Secretariat replace it with “the two parties.”

Algeria’s persistent and intrusive interference in the work of the Security Council Secretariat caused a 24-day delay in the publication of the resolution, thus inviting criticism and condemnation from Council members, and speculation and interrogations from members of the press and the general public, eager to read the official version of the resolution.

The Algerian maneuver aimed at distorting Resolution 2797, in a blatant attempt to evade its direct responsibility for the creation and perpetuation of this regional dispute, by pressuring the UN Secretariat to single out Morocco and its proxy, the “polisario”, in the upcoming negotiations.

After more than three weeks of being held hostage by Algeria, the Security Council upheld the law by ensuring the publication of the resolution in all six official languages, using the term “the parties” rather than “the two parties,” thus recognizing all four parties involved in the political process, with Algeria clearly designated as the primary party in this regional conflict.

This transparency brought about by the publication of Resolution 2797 definitively puts an end to Algerian attempts to alter the framework established by the Security Council for the political process. It dispels the linguistic artifices intended to manipulate its format and parameters.

The official text published on the UN website unequivocally confirms that Algeria remains a key party in this regional dispute, and that no maneuver, nor even translation, can mask this reality enshrined by the Security Council.
