Burkina Faso reaffirmed, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative to achieve a “just, lasting and mutually acceptable” solution to the artificial dispute around the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso to the UN, Saïdou Zongo, stressed that the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco constitutes “a basis for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable settlement of the dispute”.
Burkina Faso, noted Zongo, welcomes the adoption by the Security Council of resolution 2797, while urging “all actors to work towards its implementation and to always favor the diplomatic route”.
The ambassador also applauded Morocco’s efforts in favor of the development of the Southern Provinces of the Kingdom, through “significant investments intended to make it an economic and logistical hub for the benefit of the populations and the entire region.”
These achievements, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, health, education and higher education, “reflect Morocco’s determination to achieve inclusive and sustainable development, as well as the particular attention paid to improving the conditions of the populations of the Sahara”, concluded the ambassador.
