The Dominican Republic reaffirmed on Monday in New York its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, as well as for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while commending the Kingdom’s efforts to achieve a peaceful solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

“My country reaffirms its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco” and expresses its “support for the efforts made by this country to find a peaceful solution to settle this regional dispute,” Wellington Darío Bencosme Castaños, the Dominican Republic’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, told the UN Fourth Committee.

Castaños said that the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco represents “the only solution to the dispute” over the Sahara, welcoming, in this regard, the broad international support for the Moroccan initiative.

Santo Domingo also welcomed the United Nations’ efforts to facilitate and hold talks based on the Moroccan autonomy proposal, with a view to reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to this dispute, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2797, the ambassador concluded.
