France’s Ambassador to the UN Jérôme Bonnafont reaffirmed on Friday before the Security Council his country’s steadfast position in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
“The present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” the French ambassador reiterated in his explanation of vote regarding the Security Council’s decision not to renew Minurso’s mandate.
He also emphasized France’s support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the “sole basis” for negotiations aimed at definitively resolving the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
“It is therefore solely on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy plan that we call for the resumption of discussions to reach a just, lasting, and negotiated solution,” Bonnafont said.
