Cape Verde’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Minister, Manuel Augusto Lima Amante da Rosa, reaffirmed, Monday in New York, his country’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity over its entire territory, including the Sahara region, as well as its full backing for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only solution.
The position was expressed in a joint communiqué signed following a meeting between Lima Amante da Rosa and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Cape Verdean side also welcomed the adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara.
In the communiqué, Lima Amante da Rosa welcomed the international momentum generated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in support of the autonomy plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
Bourita, for his part, thanked his Cape Verdean counterpart for his country’s consistent and firm support for the moroccanness of the Sahara and welcomed the opening of Cape Verde’s Consulate General of the Republic in Dakhla in August 2022.
The two FMs also reaffirmed their commitment to the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, characterized by friendship, cooperation, and solidarity, as well as their determination to further strengthen their partnership.
In this context, Bourita expressed Morocco’s readiness to support Cape Verde development in priority sectors, including health, tourism, fisheries, agriculture, the blue economy, and the energy transition.
The two sides agreed to hold the third session of the Joint Cooperation Commission during the first quarter of 2027 to identify new partnership opportunities and give fresh impetus to cooperation across various sectors.
The Cape Verdean side paid tribute to the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and praised the Royal initiatives aimed at promoting peace, stability and shared prosperity in Africa, notably the Atlantic African States Initiative and the Royal Initiative to facilitate Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean.
