Chile “supports the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara region,” and “considers the autonomy proposal put forward by Morocco in 2007 to be the just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.”
This position was expressed in a joint communiqué signed following talks held Monday in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and his Chilean counterpart, Francisco Pérez Mackenna.
The meeting was attended by the President of the Republic of Chile, José Antonio Kast.
The joint communiqué further states that “Chile has decided to translate its support into bilateral action and will promote economic and trade cooperation opportunities in the Moroccan Sahara region to strengthen investment, trade, and productive development.”
It also states that Chile “welcomes Security Council Resolution 2797/2025 and endorses it, joining the calls for the parties to engage in negotiations without preconditions, on the basis of Morocco’s autonomy proposal, with a view to reaching a definitive political solution acceptable to all parties.”
During the meeting, the two ministers also signed the Terms of Reference to launch negotiations on a free trade agreement between the two countries.
