UN-Sahara: Micronesia Reiterates Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative

Micronesia reaffirmed, on Tuesday in New York, its support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco in order to resolve the regional dispute over the Sahara.

“Micronesia reaffirms its principled support for Morocco’s Autonomy proposal” as “serious and credible foundation for resolution, consistent with Security Council guidance and the imperative of national unity”, Micronesia Representative underlined before the 4th Committee of the United Nations’ General Assembly.

She also commended Morocco’s substantial investments in the Southern Provinces, which have advanced infrastructure, renewable energy, and local governance, noting that this dynamic demonstrates a commitment to inclusive development and improved living conditions in the Moroccan Sahara.

In this respect, the diplomat pointed out that her country recognizes the socio-economic and democratic progress achieved in the region.

The speaker further expressed Micronesia’s support for the political process conducted under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations and for the efforts made by the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, calling on all parties to engage constructively and in good faith in this process.

The just and final resolution of this issue will reinforce stability for the Maghreb and Sahel and strengthen prospects for regional cooperation and integration, she concluded.
