Togo on Monday reaffirmed its support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, as well as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom.
Togo is convinced that the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative constitutes “the most credible, realistic and pragmatic basis for achieving a definitive political settlement” to the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, Togo’s representative before the UN Fourth Committee said.
In this regard, the diplomat reiterated Togo’s “full support” for the Kingdom of Morocco in its “constant efforts to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to this dispute.”
Togo also welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which calls on the parties to “engage in discussions without preconditions and on the basis of the autonomy plan,” the diplomat added.
He stressed that Lomé would continue to encourage sincere efforts to achieve, within the framework established by the Security Council, a “definitive and consensual political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, in respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco.”
Togo also welcomed the opening of several general consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla by Arab, African, Latin American and Asian countries, including Togo, the diplomat added, noting that these representations “illustrate the growing role of the Moroccan Sahara as a hub for development, stability and regional outreach.”
