The work of the regional meetings on sustainable development was kicked off in Laayoune by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Ms. Leila Benali, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in the presence of the Wali of the Region of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, Governor of the Province of Laayoune, Abdeslam Bekrate, the President of the Regional Council, Sidi Hamdi Ould Errachid, the Governors of the Provinces of Tarfaya, Boujdour and Es-semara, the Presidents of the Elected Councils, local actors, as well as the representatives of civil society committed to sustainable development.

Being an important phase in the overhaul of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (SNDD), these meetings fall within the framework of a consultative process, mobilizing all the stakeholders, both at central and territorial level, in order to lay the foundations for a more sustainable development strategy.

Themed “Issues and Challenges of Territorial Sustainability”, these meetings are organized simultaneously in the Regions of Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab (Dakhla) and Guelmim-Oued Noun (Guelmim). Their aim is to implicate citizens in the development of sustainable development’s public policies and participate actively in the construction of a common future.

These meetings are also an opportunity to collect the expectations of all local, territorial, public and private actors and stakeholders, during which the Region’s situation will be analyzed, and its main priority issues will be highlighted alongside the suggestion of solutions capable of making regional development global, balanced and sustainable.

After the organization of similar meetings in other regions of the Kingdom, national meetings will be held to present the updated version of the SNDD and the roadmap for its implementation, taking into account the conclusions of the various consultations.

Moreover, an interactive consultation platform has been launched to collect the opinions and expectations of citizens in Morocco and abroad to ensure the success of this strategic project.

Adopted by the Council of Ministers and chaired by His Majesty King Mohammed VI on June 25, 2017, the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (SNDD) constitutes a reference framework for all sectoral programs. It has led to greater convergence between sectoral strategies to achieve sustainable and inclusive development.

To meet national and global challenges and issues of an economic, political or environmental nature; and to operationalize the orientations of the New Development Model and advanced regionalization, this Strategy has been updated so that it may serve as a lever capable of enshrining social justice, consolidating human development, reducing social and territorial disparities, promoting the status of women and children and ensuring the right to development for future generations.
