Kuwait reaffirmed, Tuesday in New York, its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan aimed at putting an end to the regional dispute over the Sahara within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We renew Kuwait’s support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative which constitutes a constructive basis for finding a mutually acceptable solution between all parties while respecting the unity and sovereignty of Morocco,” underlined the Deputy permanent representative of Kuwait at the UN, Faisal Ghazi Al-Enezi, before the members of the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, while reiterating the unified position of the Gulf countries regarding the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

He also reaffirmed his country’s support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General which enabled the holding of two round tables in Geneva, in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions.

Highlighting the “positive spirit” that prevailed during these two meetings, the Kuwaiti diplomat expressed his country’s support for this momentum triggered by the round tables, which “remain the only way to achieve a political solution of compromise”.

In this connection, he stressed the importance of resuming these round tables in the same format and with the same participants, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2654.

The diplomat also praised the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, aimed at facilitating the relaunch of the political process under the supervision of the Secretary General, mainly his visits to Rabat, Algiers, Nouakchott and the Algerian Tindouf camps in 2022, in addition to the informal bilateral consultations he held in March 2023 in New York with all parties.

The speaker also welcomed de Mistura’s visit to Morocco, Algeria and Mauritania last September.
