Sierra Leone has reaffirmed, before the members of the UN Committee of 24 (C-24), its support for the Autonomy plan presented by Morocco to definitively resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking during the C-24 regional seminar held this week in Managua, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Kalilu Totangi, emphasized that the Moroccan Autonomy initiative, which is in line with international law, is regarded by the Security Council as a “credible and realistic approach” for advancing the political process conducted under the auspices of the UN.
In this context, the diplomat highlighted that his country welcomes the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797 in 2025, which marks a “historic turning point” and establishes the framework for a definitive settlement of this regional dispute based on the Moroccan Autonomy initiative.
Furthermore, he underscored the growing international momentum in favor of this Initiative, which is now supported by more than 130 States worldwide.
Similarly, Sierra Leone reaffirmed its support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, aimed at facilitating the political process toward a just and lasting solution, in accordance with the provisions of Security Council Resolution 2797.
Sierra Leone further highlighted the ongoing momentum regarding socio-economic and infrastructural development in the Southern Provinces, driven by projects aimed at promoting sustainable and responsible development, environmental protection, and the valorization of local culture.
These initiatives also contribute to the empowerment of local populations and the strengthening of the human development process in the region, the delegation noted.
The Sierra Leonean diplomat finally emphasized the importance of fully respecting the ceasefire, while commending Morocco’s strengthened cooperation and coordination with MINURSO.
