The Union of the Comoros reiterated, before the UN Committee of 24 (C-24), its “full and utter” support for the Moroccan Autonomy initiative in the Sahara.

“My country reiterates its full and utter support for the autonomy initiative proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco as a credible and lasting political solution to the Sahara issue,” stressed the Representative of the Comoros during the regular session of the C-24, held from June 9 to 20 in New York.

He also noted that this initiative has garnered growing international support and is firmly in line with Security Council resolutions, which favor a pragmatic, realistic, and compromise-based approach, emphasizing that the Moroccan Autonomy plan offers a platform for dialogue that offers hope, while respecting international law.

Furthermore, the diplomat commended the Kingdom’s continued efforts to promote the development of the southern provinces, pointing out that the investments made, mainly in infrastructure, basic services, and the green economy, demonstrate Morocco’s sincere commitment to improving the living conditions of local populations. The new development model for the southern provinces, launched in 2015, constitutes a strategic lever for regional integration and stability, he added.

The speaker praised Morocco’s commitment to the United Nations-led political process, as well as the efforts led by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura.

The diplomat also reaffirmed that recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory, including its southern provinces, remains a consistent position of the Union of the Comoros, recalling that his country’s opening of a Consulate General in Laayoune is a strong and fraternal illustration of this position.

He finally called for support for a realistic, responsible, and forward-looking approach toward a mutually acceptable political solution based on the Moroccan Autonomy initiative.
