Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, held talks on Sunday in New York, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, on the latter’s request, says a press release from the Permanent Mission of Morocco to the United Nations.
The meeting, attended by Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the UN, Omar Hilale, provided an opportunity to showcase the international momentum, driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in support of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its Sahara, and supported by many countries, for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, the press release adds.
On this occasion, the Moroccan delegation reiterated the four fundamentals of the Kingdom’s position on the Moroccan Sahara, as defined by His Majesty the King, may God assist Him:
1) Supporting the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for a realistic, pragmatic, lasting political solution based on compromise;
2) Autonomy, under Moroccan sovereignty, as the one and only solution to this regional dispute;
3) Round-table talks with the participation of all parties, including Algeria, as the sole framework for this process, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2703 of October 30, 2023;
4)The scrupulous respect of the ceasefire by the other parties as a prerequisite for the continuation of the political process.
De Mistura will also hold talks with the other parties in New York, the press release adds.
