Morocco’s participation in the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York helped strengthen the international momentum, driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in support of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, said.
“Several countries from different continents have joined this momentum in support of the Moroccanness of the Sahara and of the Moroccan autonomy plan,” Bourita told the press on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
This development “demonstrates that the path toward a solution is moving forward,” he noted, adding that bilateral support for the national cause “is now taking shape at the multilateral level within the United Nations.”
“This is important because it sends a strong signal ahead of the Security Council meetings next month, which are moving in this direction,” Bourita said.
Referring to the various positions expressed or reaffirmed this week in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and of its autonomy plan, the FM recalled that Peru decided to support Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and to open a consulate in Dakhla, while Bolivia reaffirmed its position in support of the Moroccanness of the Sahara and expressed its readiness to open a trade office in the Southern Provinces.
Chile, for its part, recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and expressed support for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, the minister said, adding that the Latin American country plans to strengthen bilateral ties with Morocco across all areas on the basis of this new position.
Bourita also cited Panama, which, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, reaffirmed its position in support of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, while stating that its embassy in Rabat covers the entire Moroccan territory, including the Southern Provinces.
Mauritius, the minister added, has changed its position and now considers autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty to be “the most credible solution,” a position also expressed by Jamaica.
Armenia has likewise expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, considering that it “paves the way for strengthening the unity of the territory of the Kingdom of Morocco,” Bourita said, referring to the letter addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI by the President of the Armenian Council of Ministers, which underscores “the particular importance of the Moroccan Initiative on the Sahara.”
