The Commonwealth of Dominica reaffirmed in New York its «full support» for the Moroccan Autonomy plan for the Sahara, considering it «the basis» for a realistic and pragmatic solution to this regional dispute.
«Dominica fully supports the Autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco to end the Sahara conflict and considers it the basis for a realistic and pragmatic solution towards stability and peace in the region,» stressed Ambassador Philbert Aaron, permanent representative of the Commonwealth of Dominica to the UN, during the regular session of the UN Committee of 24 (June 9-21).
He noted that more than 118 countries support the Moroccan Autonomy initiative.
Expressing his country’s «full support» for the political process conducted under the auspices of the UN with a view to reaching a realistic, pragmatic, and mutually acceptable solution to this regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, the diplomat emphasized the role of the UN Secretary-General in advancing efforts towards a settlement of this issue in accordance with the recommendations of the Security Council. He also mentioned the role of the UN SG’s Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, aimed at relaunching the political process.
The Ambassador further reiterated his country’s call for the continued engagement of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the «polisario» in the roundtable process.
He also commended Morocco for its efforts to promote development in the Southern provinces, improving the quality of life and providing broad opportunities for the local population. «The development of the Sahara has been manifested in the improvement of infrastructure and health care, education and housing,» he added.
