Togo renewed, Monday in New York, its support for Morocco’s Autonomy initiative as the “most credible, realistic, and pragmatic” basis for a lasting political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Speaking before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Chargé d’affaires of the Permanent Mission of Togo to the UN, Koffi Akakpo, emphasized his country’s conviction that “the Moroccan Autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, constitutes the most credible, realistic, and pragmatic basis for achieving a lasting political solution” to this artificial conflict.

He stressed that this initiative, which “reconciles local autonomy with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco,” is “the best option for a negotiated solution, in a spirit of realism and responsibility.”

In this context, the diplomat highlighted the dynamics of international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, welcoming the opening in Laayoune and Dakhla of several consulates general of Arab, African, American and Asian countries, including that of Togo.

These diplomatic representations “reflect the growing recognition of the role of the Moroccan Sahara as a hub of development, stability, and regional influence,” and demonstrate the “confidence of many partners in Morocco’s vision for harmonious regional integration and inclusive development.”

Mr. Akakpo also highlighted Morocco’s economic and social development efforts in its Southern Provinces, which have helped “improve the living conditions of the population, strengthen their democratic participation, and consolidate regional stability.” This dynamic, he added, shows a clear desire to place the Moroccan Sahara within a dynamic of prosperity and regional cooperation.

The Togolese diplomat underlined, on the other hand, that his country “remains concerned” about the humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps, while calling for the establishment of “transparent mechanisms” to guarantee the protection and fundamental rights of the populations living there, as well as free and regular humanitarian access.

Mr. Akakpo also commended Morocco’s adherence to the ceasefire and its continued cooperation with MINURSO.

He reiterated his country’s support for the political process conducted under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations, noting the work of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara in promoting dialogue and reviving the process.
