Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch affirmed Tuesday in New York that the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty is the only realistic and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking on behalf of the Kingdom at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Akhannouch underscored the international momentum driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in support of the autonomy plan and for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
In this respect, he recalled that a large majority of countries in the international community consider the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as the only pragmatic and credible basis for a definitive closure of this regional dispute.
This unequivocal support, he said, shows that it is high time to turn the page on this artificial conflict, with full respect for the Kingdom’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Speaking from the podium of the General Assembly, Akhannouch also highlighted the socio-economic transformation underway in the southern provinces, thanks to the new development model and the Royal Atlantic initiatives, noting that this region of the Kingdom is now establishing itself as a strategic platform for peace, security, and co-development.
The Head of Government also reaffirmed Morocco’s full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to find a definitive solution to the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
