The United States on Monday reiterated its consistent position regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, reaffirming its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan deemed as “serious, credible and realistic”.

The United States “continues to view Morocco’s autonomy plan as serious, credible and realistic” with a view to ending this artificial conflict over the Sahara, said the U.S. State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller.

“We fully support the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General as he intensifies the UN-led political process on the Sahara to advance an enduring solution without further delay” to this regional dispute, the spokesperson pointed out at a press briefing in Washington.

The spokesperson’s comments enhrine the consistent stand of the United States, which promoted the historic recognition in 2020 by this world power and influential member of the UN Security Council of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire territory, including its southern provinces.

Answering a question on the recent visit paid by the US ambassador to Algeria, Elizabeth Moore Aubin, to Tindouf, the State Department spokesperson said that it was made as part of a UN-led visit which brought together a broad range of international donors, recalling that the US is the largest contributor worldwide to international humanitarian efforts.

“There was no bilateral engagement with the polisario” during this visit, the US official stressed.

This clear statement contradicts the allegations peddled by some media which reported alleged meetings between the US ambassador and leaders of the separatist entity.
