Gabon reiterated, Tuesday in New York, its support for the Morocco’s autonomy initiative, deeming it a “serious, credible, and constructive basis” for reaching a lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
“This initiative is consistent with international law and Security Council resolutions, and enjoys growing support within the international community,” said Lia Bouanga, Counselor at the Permanent Mission of Gabon to the UN.
Speaking before members of the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Gabonese diplomat praised the Kingdom’s efforts for the economic and social development of its Southern Provinces, particularly in infrastructure and local governance. These investments, she underlined, demonstrate Morocco’s commitment to inclusive development and the well-being of the populations of its Southern Provinces.
Ms. Bouanga also emphasized that the resolution of this regional dispute “will significantly contribute to stability and regional integration,” noting that Morocco is an “essential partner in this dynamic.”
The diplomat also recalled her country’s opening of a Consulate General in the Moroccan Sahara.
At the same time, she reiterated her country’s support for the political process, conducted under the auspices of the UN Secretary General and facilitated by his Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara, in compliance with the relevant Security Council resolutions.
