The Pacific island nation of Palau has expressed its full support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its Southern Provinces, and the Moroccan autonomy plan as the only solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position was expressed during a bilateral meeting, on Tuesday in New York, between Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita and Minister of State of Palau, Gustav Ngiracheluolu Aitaro.
During this meeting, both parties proceeded to the signing of the cooperation roadmap for the 2025-2027 period, in line with the High Guidelines of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, for an acting South-South cooperation with developing countries.
In this roadmap, Palau declared that it “recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, and praises Morocco’s serious and credible efforts to reach a realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution, based on compromise, to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.”
The country also considers “the Moroccan autonomy initiative within the Kingdom of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as the only solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, in line with the UN Security Council resolutions since 2007, including resolution 2756 of October 31, 2024.”
Palau thus joins the overwhelming majority of member countries of the international community, from Africa, Europe, the Arab world, Asia, and America, which loudly proclaim their support for the Moroccan character of the Sahara, the irreversible belonging of this region to the Kingdom of Morocco, and the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only solution to this regional dispute.
Palau also expressed its gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for the Kingdom’s willingness to elevate its relations with the Pacific Island States to unprecedented levels, while praising the Sovereign’s vision for South-South cooperation, thanks to which Morocco, with its southern provinces in particular, has become a bridge linking the various regions of the Global South.
In this roadmap, Morocco commits to sharing its experience and expertise to actively support Palau’s priorities, particularly in areas related to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
