The British government on Thursday reaffirmed its support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis for a lasting solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

The position was reaffirmed by Hamish Falconer, Minister at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in charge of the Middle East and North Africa, during a statement before the House of Commons, the lower chamber of the UK Parliament.

The United Kingdom wishes to see a lasting resolution to the Sahara dispute, Falconer said.

“We believe that our support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis for a durable solution is aligned with that objective,” he stated.

“For this reason,” the official added, “we have also welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.”
