Malta considers the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 as “a good basis for a definitive resolution” of the Moroccan Sahara issue.
This reinforcement of position was recorded in a joint communiqué issued following a videoconference meeting on Wednesday between Ian Borg, Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In the same Joint Communiqué, Malta, a member of the UN Security Council, “considers the autonomy plan presented [by Morocco] in 2007 as a serious and credible contribution to the UN-led political process to advance the process towards a definitive resolution”, and “encourages all parties to demonstrate greater political will to reach a definitive solution and to renew their commitment to the UN’s efforts in a spirit of realism and compromise.”
The two ministers also praised the excellent relations between Morocco and Malta, and reiterated their shared desire to further strengthen them in all areas.
