The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), a historic political party in Mexico, has expressed its “solidarity with the legitimate struggle” of Morocco to defend its sovereignty over its Sahara.

“Our party marks the beginning of a new stage in its international relations, reaffirming its recognition and solidarity with the legitimate struggle of the Moroccan people to defend their sovereignty over the Sahara,” said PRI President Alejandro Moreno on X, following his meeting Wednesday in Mexico City with the speaker of Morocco’s House of representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, who is leading a parliamentary delegation on a two-day visit to this Latin American country.

The announcement made by the PRI president is of particular importance given that it was this party, then in power, that had agreed in 1979 to Mexico’s recognition of the so-called “sadr”.

“In a multipolar world in constant transformation, the PRI remains at the forefront, defending Mexico’s interests and promoting a renewed global architecture,” said Mr. Moreno, who underlined the need to respect the principles of non-intervention and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

During a special session held Tuesday at the Mexican Chamber of deputies marked by a speech delivered by the Speaker of the House of representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, MP Marcela Guerra called, on behalf of this party founded in 1912, for reinforced relations between Morocco and Mexico, two countries that play a strategic role in their respective regional environments.

Speaking at Mexico’s Lower House, the MP also highlighted the potential of the partnership between the two countries, built over 60 years of diplomatic relations, and bolstered by several cooperation agreements in various areas.

The MP also noted the importance of Morocco and Mexico as respective gateways to Africa and the Americas, capable of contributing to stability and international development.

The parliamentary delegation led by Mr. Talbi Alami includes Mohamed Chaouki, president of the National Rally of Independents group, Ahmed Touizi, president of the Authenticity and Modernity group, Rachid Hamouni, president of the Progress and Socialism group, and Abdellah Bouanou, president of the Justice and Development Party’s group.
