Burundi has reiterated its “steadfast position” in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region, as well as its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan “as the only credible and realistic solution to resolve this regional dispute.”

This position was expressed in a joint communiqué signed on Tuesday between Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, Édouard Bizimana, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, following a meeting held in New York, on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly.

The communiqué also welcomes “the growing international consensus and the momentum spurred by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in favor of the autonomy plan and the Kingdom of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.”

The two ministers commended the “exemplary ties between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to do everything possible to develop, intensify, and diversify their cooperation in several areas, in line with the political will expressed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, and His Excellency President Evariste Ndayishimiye,” the communiqué stated.
