The newly elected President of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), Carla Gutiérrez, on Tuesday in Guatemala City, reaffirmed the decision of Parlacen’s General Assembly to support the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Moroccan autonomy plan as the only realistic and serious solution to the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
This reaffirmation of Parlacen’s support took place during a meeting between Gutiérrez and the members of the Moroccan parliamentary section at Parlacen, namely Ahmed Lakhrif of the House of Councillors, as well as Hayat Laaraych and Abdelaali Barouki of the House of Representatives, in the presence of Morocco’s Ambassador to Guatemala, Tarik Louajri.
On this occasion, the new Parlacen President expressed her determination to initiate a new phase in relations between the two sides on solid foundations capable of elevating their cooperation to the highest level, and conveyed her willingness to strengthen joint action with the Kingdom, according to a statement from the House of Councillors.
Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has now become a model in supporting South-South cooperation, Gutiérrez said, praising the Kingdom’s pioneering experience in women’s empowerment and promoting their representation within various institutions.
The members of the Moroccan parliamentary delegation highlighted the deep ties between the Moroccan Parliament and Parlacen, noting that these relations have become a model of South-South parliamentary cooperation based on mutual respect and solidarity.
They also underlined Morocco’s numerous achievements in strengthening relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally, noting that the Kingdom is today an observer member enjoying advanced partnership status with all parliamentary organizations and unions in the region, reflecting growing confidence in Morocco’s leadership at both the continental and international levels.
The Moroccan delegation also emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to developing partnerships based on cooperation, openness, and shared responsibility, and its willingness to strengthen coordination with Parlacen across all sectors, particularly sustainable development, women’s empowerment, regional peace, and economic and cultural cooperation.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to once again commend Parlacen’s principled positions supporting the autonomy initiative as the sole fair and realistic solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, a support formalized by Parlacen’s General Assembly vote in June in El Salvador, endorsing a clear decision in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
The meeting between Gutiérrez and the Moroccan delegation was her first official audience since her election, the statement noted, adding that the session took place in the presence of the members of the new executive bureau of this important Central American regional parliamentary body.
