The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) renewed, in New York, its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom to settle the regional dispute over the Sahara.
Having opened its Consulate General in Dakhla, since December 2022, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is among the countries which support the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Moroccanness of the Sahara region, underlined the RDC’s Representative during the ordinary session of the UN Committee of 24 (June 10-21).
The diplomat further renewed his country’s support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 and which is described as serious and in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, adding that this initiative is “the compromise solution” to the regional dispute.
He also reaffirmed his country’s support for the political process held under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General aimed at achieving a political, just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution.
In this regard, he welcomed the efforts made by the UNSG’s Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, in order to relaunch the political process, including his informal bilateral consultations with Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the “polisario”.
