Spanish Government President Pedro Sánchez reiterated, on Wednesday in Rabat, his country’s position supporting the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007, to resolve the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Speaking at a press conference held at the end of his working visit to the Kingdom, Sánchez reaffirmed the Spanish government’s position as expressed in the Joint Declaration adopted on April 7, 2022, and the Joint Declaration issued at the end of the 12th Morocco-Spain High-Level Meeting (HLM) on February 2, 2023.

He stressed that Spain’s position on the Sahara issue was clearly expressed in these two declarations, considering the autonomy plan as “the most serious, realistic and credible basis” for resolving this dispute.

Earlier in the day, HM King Mohammed VI received Pedro Sánchez, President of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain, at the Royal Palace in Rabat.

This visit follows on from the new stage in bilateral relations, initiated by the meeting between HM the King and the President of the Spanish Government in April 2022, and the adoption, on that occasion, of the Joint Declaration between the two countries.
